As preparations for Rebuilding Day 2011 shift into high gear it’s hard not to think about the amazing experience I had participating in my first Rebuilding Day ever last year. Not only did I meet,
work alongside and celebrate (party) with some of the coolest most big-hearted people this city has to offer, I helped beautify an ugly city overpass with a mural that I continue see at least once a month as I work around the city. The emotional high I experienced that weekend would have grown the Grinch’s heart three sizes if he’d been there! I’m sure many of you reading this know exactly what I’m talking about. However, what you might not know is that the opportunity to participate in the life changing work of Rebuilding Together San Francisco is available all year long through our Home Safety & Independence Program. Did you know that the leading cause of injury related death for people over 65 is falling? And that falling is the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospital admissions for trauma?
Our Home Safety Program helps low-income, elderly and disabled San Franciscans live safely and comfortably in their homes by making minor modification and repairs that prevent falls and increase comfort. The modifications range in complexity from meeting with an applicant and doing a home assessment on one end, to swapping out a defunct water heater on the other end (with lots more in between). This year our home safety services are being expanded to include home energy efficiency upgrades and weatherization services. While we are always eager for volunteers already skilled in the trades our home safety and energy saving programs have an orientation and training process that can provide any passionate volunteer with the skills they needs to serve our clients. If you love being a part of Rebuilding Day, and you want to continue serving vulnerable home owners throughout the year in a direct, hands-on capacity, consider joining the Home Safety Team. I’m glad I did!
