The Project: The Oceanview/Merced/Ingleside Family Resource Center (OMI-FRC) offers a large variety of services to the diverse OMI community. Their mission is to strengthen the community through support geared towards families, support education, advocacy and community involvement.

Why we LOVE them: The OMI-FRC offers a large variety of services to from offering information on available resources, intensive case management, parenting and support groups to community events and a weekly free food pantry. They are supporting the community by “helping families help themselves.”

How they found us: We are actively outreaching to San Francisco by presenting during community meetings. During a presentation, at an OMI community meeting, the OMI-FRC learned about our services and immediately became interested in our services. They submitted an application, went through our process and was served this past Rebuilding Day 2012. They are also a community partner with the OMI Community Collaborative (OMI-CC) and we’ve worked on their other site a few years ago.

The Need: There are many programs and services that come from the OMI-FRC. Like many non-profit organizations in San Francisco, they have taken some blows from the economy. Their once safe, and inviting back yard began to be overrun with weeds, and deteriorated into an unsafe environment for children. They hope that with Rebuilding Together San Francisco’s help, their back yard becomes transformed into a safe, beautiful, and inviting space for the community they serve.  It is a very important space for the OMI-FRC because it is sometimes the only place parents can be with their kids during supervised visits.

The Rebuilding Day Team: Under the leadership of Construction Captains Kyle Little and Mark Congdon, the OMI-FRC received the back yard space they dreamed of. This was all made possible by all the amazing volunteers under the leadership of Volunteer Captains from BlackRock, Regina Rodgers and Forrest Kitlas. Amongst the fantastic BlackRock volunteers, Paul Scorer really stuck out as a volunteer RockStar. He came for both the pre-build and build day and he really took ownership of a multitude of tasks that he had never previously had experience with. Everything from digging out concrete, leveling gravel, laying brick, and gardening. Paul was a true example of the hard work and dedication that BlackRock employees bring to the workplace and outside events. Great job to all the volunteers involved, the OMI FRC is amazed at the work you accomplished and are very grateful for the impact it has made in their organization!
