200 Volunteers Join Final Phase Construction of San Francisco’s “Greenest Building”
San Francisco – November 17, 2009 –On Tuesday, November 17, Rebuilding Together San Francisco mobilized 250 Dreamforce volunteers to put the final touches on San Francisco’s first “off grid” building. The EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park is a project of Literacy for Environmental Justice and sits at the foot of the now closed PG&E Hunters Point Power Plant. When complete, it will provide unique environmental education programming for the residents of San Francisco.
At 8:30 a.m., a crowd of Salesforce.com and Motorola employees, customers and users showed up by the bus load to paint the interior and exterior of the center, install office and kitchen cabinetry, build a fence around the leach field, and plant thousands of native plants to help restore the fragile wetlands at Heron’s Head Park. This is the largest project that RTSF has undertaken in its 20-year history.
We were thrilled to work with Salesforce.com and the Salesforce Foundation on this project. Not only did they bring organized and enthusiastic volunteers who can really make a difference in a day, they also helped us set up online registration for the 200+ volunteers. Thanks Salesforce.com!
Literacy for Environmental Justice said “This workday is bringing us a thousand hours closer to opening the EcoCenter’s doors. The EcoCenter is a source of great pride in our community, and we welcome the contribution of Rebuilding Together and all those who want to build a more sustainable future for our youth.”
