Rebuilding Weekend 2009
~ 20th
Year
It's been 20 years since
the Loma Prieta earthquake shook the Bay Area and
gave rise to our organization. Since then,
Rebuilding Together San Francisco has harnessed
the talents and good will of many a volunteer to
renovate the homes of seniors in need and
nonprofit community facilities that serve our
city's residents. Over the years, RTSF has
built strong relationships throughout San
Francisco to deepen our impact with the passage of
time. This is a tumultuous
economic year and raising funds for Rebuilding
Weekend 2009 has been a challenge. However RTSF
has still managed to raise sponsorships for
Rebuilding Weekend 2009 projects and will stay
connected with all of our community partners
regardless of funding levels. After all,
Rebuilding Together is an organization made up of
volunteers and people drive the work that we
do. RTSF is looking forward

Facilities Feature:
Shades of Green
Over the years Rebuilding Together San
Francisco has incorporated many green activities
within the scope of our work, from gardening
without chemicals to reusing appliances and
building materials. As awareness grows about the
impact of human development on our natural
environment, RTSF's greening has become more
focused to parallel the awakening that is taking
place.
In the past year, Rebuilding
Together's intensified greening efforts have been
centered on Daniel Webster Elementary, a school in
Potrero Hill that needed extra support after
avoiding closure. RTSF partnered with Jane
Martin of Plant*SF to develop an
innovative plan to soften the school's hard visual
edges with plants. Working with the Bureau of
Urban Forestry and Friends
of the Urban Forest, RTSF got permits to
remove 440 square feet of concrete in front of the
school to plant trees and low-watering plants.
Vines now grow on the chain link fence lining the
playground, creating a natural break from passing
street traffic. Rebuilding Together would
like to acknowledge Katherine Doumani of PREFund for her contributions
to the greening of Daniel Webster.
Schools like Daniel Webster Elementary
provide an opportunity for Rebuilding Together to
make a long-term commitment to an organization and
have a deeper impact on the community being
served. This April will be RTSF's third pass
at Daniel Webster, and the finishing touches will
include a system for water catchment planned in
partnership with David Fletcher of Fletcher
Studios. We already have plans in the works
for our next school greening project at McKinley
Elementary. Along the way, RTSF is
strengthening our relationships with the school
district and other city entities.
As
we look to the next 20 years, Rebuilding Together
aims to offer RTSF volunteers a chance to
participate in meaningful public service projects
that will benefit the city for years to come and
embody RTSF's commitment to a lasting
environmental impact. We want to leverage the
"muscle" of RT volunteers to support efforts that
serve as living examples of sustainable design and
better use of public space. Visual examples of an
urban environment that is more integrated with
nature will inspire people to make the changes
needed for a healthier human footprint going
forward. Concentrating this greening effort in
schools will have the added benefit of inspiring
the upcoming generation to imagine the solutions
we need for the future.

Volunteer Spotlight: John
Calvello One of Home Safety &
Independence's year-round volunteers, John
Calvello has been with RTSF for 5 years now. John
is a Local 22 Union Carpenter, and a fantastic one
at that, which keeps him working all over the Bay
Area. Not only is he one of the busiest (and
friendliest) guys we know, John is also very
community minded. In addition to volunteering with
other local organizations and taking art classes
at City College, he can be found cheering on one
of his athletically inclined kids. A San Francisco native,
John has volunteered with RTSF since Rebuilding
Weekend 2004, with his daughter and the Sacred
Heart Cathedral Preparatory team, which has been
sponsoring projects for RTSF for 5 years now. We
were thrilled when he offered to help out
year-round and have kept him busy ever
since! John says what he
appreciates about volunteering with RTSF is the
great feeling of being able to help someone out.
When given an assignment, he enjoys figuring out
what the problem is, tackling and then solving it
- leaving our clients safer and happier as a
result. John has volunteered for practically every
aspect of RTSF, from our annual Rebuilding Weekend
program, various off-season projects, Home Safety
& Independence (HS&I) and our newest
program, Home Renewal. Because John is so busy,
having small, self-contained projects gives him
the freedom to arrange the volunteer work around
his schedule. There are never a shortage of
skilled 'one-person jobs' at RTSF. It is extremely
rewarding to work with John - not only is his work
stellar, but our clients (as well as staff) adore
him!

RTSF & Kaiser Team
Up For MLK Day of
Service
Three
years ago, Kaiser initiated an annual Day of
Service with RT chapters of the Bay Area region to
honor Martin Luther King Jr. This off-season
project is an event that RTSF looks forward to
planning each year with Elizabeth Ferber, Kaiser's
Senior Public Service Representative.
The site chosen this year was Haight
Ashbury Psychological Services, a nonprofit
institution that has served San Francisco for
nearly 30 years with a duel purpose, offering
low-cost psychological services to the public
while providing training for future
therapists.
Donna Zoll, our main
point of contact for HAPS, was an exemplary
partner in this effort, which was crucial given
the compressed time frame and the complexity of
the work planned for the facility.
Everything came together to result in an amazing
transformation of the space.
Two aspects of this endeavor made all the
difference in the quality of work RTSF delivered -
color selection by Jane Martin of Shift
Design Studio and photographic prints by Phil
Bond of Phil Bond
Photography. The photographs were selected
with the colors and layout of the facility in
mind. It was a very successful collaboration
that was greatly appreciated by all
involved. Just in time now that a Day of
Service on MLK Day has become a Presidential
directive!
