Gearing up for Green Auditing

Under the leadership of Executive Director Karen Nemsick, Rebuilding Together San Francisco (RTSF) has been actively looking for ways to expand green initiatives within our work. As any long term volunteer will tell you, RTSF is no stranger to the green scene: for years we have been champions of material reuse and recycling, native plant use, energy and water conservation and so much more.  Through partnerships with GRID Alternatives, the EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park, the SF Public Utility Commission, Recology and others, RTSF has been able to make a tremendous impact on the health, safety, and long term sustainability of the city of San Francisco.

Therefore, our latest partnership with SF Environment’s Green Home Assessment program should come as no surprise.  As part of the Green Home Assessment program, RTSF staff and volunteers will perform basic energy and safety audits of the homes or apartments of San Francisco residents.

The primary goals of this program are: to educate residents about small changes they can make to improve the safety and comfort of their home; identify simple water and energy saving opportunities that benefit the homeowner and the city; encourage residents to commit to actions that will help the city meet its climate goals; and to indirectly feed the growing number of green collar jobs and businesses for the benefit of the local economy.  This partnership is especially exciting to RTSF for two reasons: first, it’s in line with our goal to launch an energy audit and weatherization program this year, and second, it comes with funding!!  That’s right; RTSF will be paid for every audit we complete.  SF Environment has set a very ambitions goal of completing 5,000 audits under this program and for RTSF to complete its share, we’re gonna need a lot of help!

If you want to join in, there are two ways to participate: one, become a volunteer and two, sign up to have an audit done at your home! RTSF has always been, and always will be, committed to helping low income San Franciscans, but this SF Environment grant has no demographic restrictions.  If you want to learn more about safety and energy use in your home, help the city reach its climate goals, or just make a donation to RTSF that costs you nothing but an hour of your time, sign up for an audit today!  If you want to be more involved, consider joining our Green Home Assessment team as a volunteer home assessor or as administrative support.

For more information contact RTSF and ask for Jonathan.  He’s waiting anxiously by the phone for your call.  No really, he is.
